OK, here's the scoop on "raw" whey protein: If you purchased your whey protein in the U.S., it is not "raw". This applies to Organic Grass-fed Whey as well as any other brand sold in the U.S.
Why isn't whey protein sold in the U.S. made from raw milk?
The FDA requires that all milk (and therefore all milk products) sold for human consumption is pasteurized. Since pasteurization involves heating milk well above the 108 degree Fahrenheit limit that is the typical cutoff for something to be considered "raw", no whey protein sold in the U.S. would qualify as truly being raw.
(For more information about our pasteurization process, we recommend checking out this article.)
So why do some companies claim that their whey protein is raw?
There is a perception (which may or may not be true) that raw milk is healthier than pasteurized milk, so brands that claim "raw" are simply doing this for marketing purposes. Our goal, on the other hand, is to provide you with honest, transparent information about our products and manufacturing processes, so we will not make unsubstantiated claims like this even though it may cost us some sales.
